The Skin

by James Downs

From Canary Summer 2010

James lives on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada near the watershed of the Tuolumne River and along the watershed of The Merced River.

That thin sheath
between the interior of the body and the world
what we owe standing here     bone
bleached by the sun

process that goes in and out the ear     everything we hear

we grasp
the apple     and bite down
hard     indentations
clearly marked

puncture the curve of the earth     with our love
